Independence is the largest suburb on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro and one of two seats of Jackson County. It was the starting point for the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails, so the city's history is part of its streets. In any older neighborhood with sidewalks and fences, barking along fence lines and greeting passersby are common things to work on.

The road network here is dense. Interstate 70 runs east and west, Interstate 470 follows Missouri Route 291 south toward Lee's Summit, Interstate 435 runs just outside the western city limits, and U.S. Routes 24 and 40 mark part of the borders. Truman Road links the Independence Square to downtown Kansas City. With so many choices, decide on a route with your trainer in advance, and ask about a pickup option.

A stay helps most when the lessons match your home. If you live near the historic center, practice calm leash walking on busy sidewalks and around bikes. If you live on the city's edges, practice recall and door manners. For any park or public space, read the posted rules for dogs and leashes before bringing your dog, because policies vary and can change.

A small part of Independence extends into Clay County, but most of the city is in Jackson County. Budget-wise, a typical Independence owner is looking at a general range of $1,500 to $2,500 and up for a multi-week stay, with each trainer free to set a different rate. Extras such as photo updates, handoff lessons or check-ins can move that number, so write down what each trainer includes.
